LETTER-TO-THE-EDITOR December 24, 2001

Why them and not us?

You may have missed it. It was part of a small article way back on page 9-A of the Sunday, Dec. 23rd, edition.

"Bush signs bill allowing funds to be invested in stock market."

It refers to the Railroad Retirement Trust Fund, one of 150 trust funds administered by the 'feds.' Included in that group is the Social Security Trust Fund which presently holds over a trillion dollars of worthless IOUs only redeemable by the very taxpayers that paid into it in the first place.

And let us not forget the interest.

To add insult to injury the bill also allows for workers with 30 years service to retire at age 60 at a time when Congress is contemplating raising the retirement age for the rest of the taxpayers.

I have no objection to the railroad workers' trust fund getting this windfall.

After all, what's good for the railroad folks should be good enough for the balance of the working public.

I do have one minor question re this investment action. Will the proceeds be used to replenish the fund or be used by the Congress as they have done on this and all other trust funds?

In addition: Do you think that their lobbyist is doing a better job than ours?
