DEMOCRACY
WHAT HAPPENED TO IT?
Of the people, by the people, and for the people, isn't that the form of government we've been recommending to everyone? Haven't we been running about the world preaching democracy as the only worthwhile form of government? Isn't it democracy that separates the free world from the rest of the world?

Forget what's been happening here at home for the moment. Forget the CIA, the TIA, the Patriot Act and the Uniform Code of Military Justice that seem to be making their way into our daily lives. And just think about the "coalition of the willing" that our President is trying to put together before he invades Iraq, a nation that needs reform.

You certainly cannot believe that the leader of our great nation, the last remaining superpower, the prime example and the greatest democracy in the world means to enlist the people of these other nations against their will can you? We wouldn't pressure, coerce, or make deals with the leaders of these other nations simply to force them to fall in line beside us unless their people also supported our cause would we?

We wouldn't demand that former allies join our coalition just for old time's sake nor because we did them favors in the past would we? We wouldn't be calling in markers as though they were chits in the Social Security trust funds unless the British, French, and the rest of the European people were behind us now would we?

We wouldn't expect Canada, Mexico, South America, Australia, the Netherlands, Africa, Turkey, India, Greece, Egypt, and the Baltic States to fall in behind us unless their people were in favor of this invasion of Iraq would we?

Isn’t that what democracy is all about, the will of the people?

We know all about polls. They're one of our greatest inventions. We know how they can be used and misused. So if we're hearing stories about how a majority of the people in these other nations are against George's war it must be because they were asked the wrong biased questions. Either that or it's more communist propaganda, right?

Onward and upward in the name of freedom. Let's stomp those mothers in Iraq before they get us.
