TRUSTEES
Normally, every trust fund has at least one trustee who has the duty to preserve the property in trust. However, the federal government currently has 137 trust funds in Intragovernmental Holdings (see list) and seems to have trustees only in the Social Security and Medicare trusts.

This includes the Federal Old Age & Survivors Insurance trust; the Federal Disability Insurance trust; The Federal Hospital Insurance trust; and the Supplementary Medical Insurance trust fund.

As of their appointments on May 1, 2006 the Boards of Trustees for both Social Security and Medicare are as follows:

John W. Snow, Secretary of the Treasury and Managing Trustee of the Trust Funds.

Elaine L. Chao, Secretary of Labor and Trustee.

Michael O. Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services and Trustee.

Jo Anne B. Barnhart, Commissioner of Social Security and Trustee.

John L. Palmer, Trustee

Thomas H. Saving, Trustee

These trustees, and those before them, produce annual reports on the condition of Social Security and Medicare. For the last years, these are as follows:
